The islands of the Gulf

For travellers in Ancient times these islands were places where they could find Myth, Utopia and Wonder. Tales and stories from the past treated those lands in the middle of the sea as exotic, different, mysterious and fascinating. Geographical descriptions were embellished with exotic symbols and were coloured by legend and magic.

For today’s tourists arriving in the Bay of Naples, the situation has not changed: we still set off on our voyage to Capri, Ischia and Procida desir ous of rediscovering distant paradises, the Island of Happiness, the island of Goodness, the Island of the Ruby. Capri, Ischia and Procida have, of course, shared many of the fleeting and endearing qualities which have been narrated over the centuries: the splendid enchanting Sirens, the volcanic giant Tifeo, the mighty divine Heracles. During the 19 Century Grand Tour, the sensations and perceptions of these islands were brought up to date, thanks also to art and literature, scientific, biological and archaeological research all of which revealed the intimacy of the Capri, Ischia and Procida, simultaneously cre- th ating new global myths around the three microcosms situated in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea. So Capri, Ischia and Procida continue to be three separate, irresistible and fascinating islands. Visiting them is an inebriating experience, even before we set foot on land. Capri is urbane exclusivity, albeit set in a context which has always been based on similar icons, from Augustus to Tiberius, from Malaparte to Fersen and so on. Ischia is a real miniature mainland, on account of its micro-climate, its multitude of landscapes, echoing the sound of boiling sulphurous water. Procida is more maritime, a real as a clam, a magical architectural trap, with its fleet of fishingboats and its rust-proof sailors. This handy guide is dedicated to the three islands of the Parthenopean archipelago and so is therefore a useful tool for a voyage among the emotions, a pocket compass that can be used to set a course for the discovery of natural wonders, monuments, quirks, folklorand traditional dishes: it will be a memorable trip!
